What to watch

Sitting 3.5 games outside of Eastern Conference playoff convention like they seemingly have been for the like the past 3 months, the Wizards still have a spec of a fraction of a slight chance to crawl into the final playoff spot if literally every single star in the galaxy lines up for them accordingly. To clarify:

This means that a Wizards loss tonight + Pistons win = first class flight tickets and AirBnB reservations for Anguilla booked by midnight. The Pistons, who are probably play the 33-44 Orlando Magic tonight, making things already look bleak for the Wizards.

To be positive, the high stakes for tonight’s game should encourage the Wizards to continue to play with some urgency, which in turn will allow us to see them compete at a high level at least one more time this season before the inevitable occurs and we all stop caring.

Key Matchup

The Washington Wizards vs. The Brooklyn Who’s?

The Wizards have certainly underachieved this season and outside of Wall and one other player – maybe two, the roster is not very great, at least not on paper. The Nets, however, are straight garbage. They trot out a lineup of Rondae Hollis-Jefferson, Wayne Ellington, Henry Sims, Shane Larkin, and Thomas Robinson on a nightly basis. This is their starting lineup. And as you can probably imagine, their bench players are just a group of walking Google search entries.

The Nets are losers of five straight and 14 of their last 17 and 56 of their last 77. The have zero star talent on the team. If the Wizards’ path to the playoffs is constructed of the thinnest ice, well at least the starting portion of the journey is easily passable. The Wizards’ margin of victory seriously shouldn’t be any closer than the smallest double-digit.

Understanding the implications of tonight’s game and the rest of the season. Despite stakes being at the highest they’ve been all season, and despite the detriment any loss is to their playoff hopes, the Wizards have come out at times looking as if they’ve already secured that playoff spot. In fact, that’s exactly how Jared Dudley described his teammates after a loss to the Jazz a few weeks ago. And of course there was Beal digging a mass grave to bury his teammates for their lack of effort in the loss in Sacramento. Clearly, the Wizards have struggled to find the much needed mojo to help prepare them for a playoff run. Still, they have a chance to find that mojo tonight. It just might be too late anyways.

Fun Factor:

This isn’t really fun, but it is a solid pregame pasttime if you haven’t done it yet. The Grunfeld Grader!

The Wizards win. But so do the Pistons. The playoff plot thickens.
