Wizards vs. Bucks game preview: Keep on truckin’

Milwaukee (3-15) at Washington (9-9)

December 6, 2013 at 7:00 PM
Verizon Center, Washington, DC
TV: CSN Washington
Radio: 106.7FM The Fan

Projected starting lineups:

Washington Wizards
C- Marcin Gortat, PF- Nene, SF- Trevor Ariza, SG- Martell Webster, PG- John Wall

Milwaukee Bucks
C– Zaza Pachulia, PF- Ersan Ilyasova, SF- Caron Butler, SG- OJ Mayo, PG- Brandon Knight

Key matchup:

Ariza/Webster v. OJ Mayo

OJ Mayo is the only player on the Bucks that scares me a little. As we saw last game, he can get hot at any moment and then go all AAU on your team. Guarding him will fall on the combo of Martell Webster and preferably Trevor Ariza, who has been playing out of his mind recently. His offensive game has been impressive but its been his defense that has sent ripples through the Verizon Center. Ariza has been knocked in the past for his gambling defense, but this year the gambling has paid off with dividends. If the Wiz are able to neutralize Mayo then you should be able to put this one in the win column.

John Wall.Wall should have the spotlight from now on because we put spotlights on superstars and this guy is turning into a bona fide one right before our eyes. It seems as if the more attention he receives, the better he plays. His jump shot is constantly getting better and he’s becoming a better and more vocal leader. If you had to train your eyes on one player tonight, focus on Wall and prepare to be wowed and entertained.

The X-factor:

Eric Maynor. He will be my X-factor every time I do these preview posts. As the saying goes, the beatings will continue until morale improves. To date, he has been a leech on offensive production. Due to the injuries to Beal and Porter, the starters are clocking crazy minutes and Coach Wittman would love to lean on the bench a little more. Thats tough when the firt guy off of the bench plays as bad as Maynor has. I don’t think Maynor is as bad as he has played this season but until he and the rest of the bench gets better, the Wizards are playing with the effectiveness and the health of the starting lineup. And I say nay.

What happened last time they played?

These guys just squared off last Wednesday and the Wizards dominated the game but somehow allowed the Bucks to claw their way back and force overtime behind some clutch shooting by OJ Mayo. But the Wizards were able to pull away mostly due to the play of Marcin Gortat, who went 11-12 from the field.

Who’s hurt?

The Wizards injuries include the usual cast of characters — Al Harrington and Bradley Beal. Otto Porter has been listed as a game-time decision and may be active. The Bucks will be without Larey Sanders and Tough Juice.

The Bucks are the worst team in the Eastern Conference which is saying a lot. On paper, the Wizards should crush the Bucks but we all know that the Wiz have a tendency to play down to their competition. In the midst of this run, that Wizards fans predicted but still can’t believe, the Wiz have beat the teams that were supposed to beat and they can’t let up tonight. The Wizards let their foot off of the gas and almost lost the last game. For them to be taken seriously, these are the games that they must win. I think the Wiz win this one handedly and continue their red hot play.
