Welp, it didn’t take very long for a fresh trade rumor regarding the Wizards #3 pick to surface as draft week gets underway. ESPN’s Marc Stein reported earlier today that the Wizards and Bulls were in some sort of discussion regarding the possibility of sending Luol Deng from Chicago to Washington in exchange for the number 3 pick and Emeka Okafor.
Sources close to the situation told ESPN.com that the Chicago Bulls, in their latest attempt to gauge the trade value of All-Star swingman Luol Deng, have had exploratory discussions with Washington about a deal that would land Deng with the Wizards and bring the No. 3 pick in Thursday’s draft to the Bulls.
There’s no question that the prospect of losing a top 3 pick, along with a valued player in Okafor for a player who is closing in on the age of 30 with uncertain health is all but appealing. Not to mention the other uncertainty regarding Deng’s future once his contract expires after this season, and the question of whether or not he’d even resign with the team.
There doesn’t seem to be any positive angle when analyzing the potential of this trade. The nature of the rumor is very off-putting when you consider the consequence of losing out on raw 20-year old talent, as well as your anchor on defense.
At this point I’m just hoping the exchange between Ernie Grunfeld and the Bulls front office was initiated by a blocked call that EG mistakenly picked up, and not a returned voicemail.
We’ll keep an eye out on this one, of course.
