The Wizards will begin their preparation for their 8th annual Vegas Summer League stint at the Verizon Center tonight and as usual, the squad will be comprised of rookies, underachievers and big dreamers. Who the roster won’t include this summer, unfortunately, are last year’s draft picks Bradley Beal and Tomas Satoransky. Beal is still nursing a stress injury in his right leg, while Satoransky is dealing with some apparent contractual issues with the ACB, a league he’s currently playing for in Spain. Satoranksy is, however, expected to be in DC sometime this summer to work out at the Verizon Center.
While this year’s Summer League spotlight will obviously be beaming on top pick Otto Porter, the Wizards also have some bones to pick with a few underachievers from a previous draft – Chris Singleton and Jan Vesely. The 2011 picks were initially victims of a locked out offseason before their rookie campaigns began, which forced them to miss out on Summer League competition and impacted their early development. But despite finally getting their crack at Vegas last summer, it proved no worth for them as both players continued to struggle throughout their sophomore seasons, especially Jan Vesely, whose numbers substantially dropped from his rookie season in literally every statistical category.
As for this year’s picks Porter and Glen Rice, Jr., they’ll get their first stint at pro action and have the opportunity to display their talents in front of fans, coaches and scouts, as well as an occasional NBA legend lurking in and out of the compact Cox Pavilion gym. Operating the offense for them will be point guard Sundiata Gaines, a returning Wizards Summer Leaguer. Gaines was not on an NBA roster this past season, but has played a total of 113 games in his career, most recently with the Nets in 2011-12. His experience should benefit Porter and Rice.
One other notable on this year’s roster is Devin Booker, the younger brother of Trevor. Devin, who also hails out of Clemson, has nearly the identical frame as his older brother, standing at 6’8/250. As a senior with the Tigers, Booker averaged 13.1 ppg along with 7.1 boards. In March, he was named Third-Team All-ACC.
