Game Notebook 72, Wizards vs. Pacers: A Final Play Blunder Pulls Defeat Out of the Jaws of Victory

A Heartbreaker in Chinatown.

What to watch: Paul George! Paul George is back for the Pacers, and since his return, the Pacers have yet to lose.

His numbers:

  • 4 Games. 10.3 points, 3.8 rebounds, 38% shooting, 4 wins.

Obviously, PG-13 (yup, he changed his number) isn’t back to usual fringe Superstar status. But he’s having an impact on the Pacers. His presence is creating openings the Pacers haven’t had all season, and his defense is coming around faster than his offense.

He’s still in the mode of finishing dunks like this:

But don’t forget, this is the same guy who used to throw down in-game dunks like this:

And he didn’t tear an ACL, he broke his leg. As gruesome as it looked, his full recovery and return to confidence is likely to be easier than someone like say, Derrick Rose.

Key match-up: Pacers vs. the Playoffs.

The Wizards are firmly locked in to the 5 seed. The Pacers are fighting for their life for the 8 seed. So matter how badly the Wizards want this game (which probably isn’t that badly) the Pacers are going to want it more. Expect their team to be amped, and their home crowd to be equally amped.

X-factor:John wall caring. John Wall was quoted by the Washington Post as saying, “We know we have a rivalry with them. We feel like we owe them from last year.”

Yes! Yes! Yes!

No matter how meaningless this game is, Wall has not forgotten who sent him home early last year. He’s got the opportunity to send Indiana home early this year, by denying them entry into the playoffs. And he sounds like he’s excited about it. If the entire team follows John Wall’s lead, maybe the Pacers won’t want this game more afterall.

Fun factor: The chance to remind everyone what Paul George’s injury looked like!

Sorry…But after seeing that, you gotta give the guy props just for being back out there this season. Give him a little ovation whether you like him or not.

Prediction: Wall gets revenge for last year, puts a Steve Buckhantz approved “Dagger” in the Pacers season.
