Game Notebook 27, Wizards vs. Grizzlies: A “Christmas Gift” From Saint John

Wizards 100
Grizzlies 91

December 23, 2015 – Verizon Center, Washington, DC

ESPN Box Score

‘Twas two nights before Christmas and all through The Booth
John Wall was dishing and swishing the hoop
The passes were slung to open teammates with care
In hopes that open shooters strokes would be there

The threes rained down a snug forty four percent
While the Grizzlies of Memphis fell flat and left dead
Double-doubles again from Gortat and Wall
John once again proving he balls better than all

Oubre again soaring, climbing the ladder
Garrett’s twenty again made Brad’s absence not matter
Away through the defense Wall flew like a flash
Controlling the tempo and throwing up cash

The moon finally set on another triumphant show
Gave lustre to a streak up to three in a row
And we all exclaimed joyously “our team’s gettin right!”
Merry victory to Wall, and to all a good night.

The Game’s Top Performer:

John Wall – 14 points; 14 assists; 5 rebounds; 1 steal; 1 block.

Santa Wall was on his sleigh once again, seemingly everywhere at once, with gifts of wide open shots for everyone’s stockings. He followed up a career high 19 assist game with another 14 dimes, turning his nine man roster into an All-Star team. Teams with nine man rosters and injured top scorers aren’t supposed to have SIX players in double figures, but that’s exactly what happened. That’s all Wall. Oh, and he added 5 rebounds and 2 steals. Saint Nick got nothing on Saint John.

A forgettable night for..

Grizzly 3 point shooting.

Talk about coal. For once, a team faced the Wizards and had an ATROCIOUS three point shooting night. The Grizzlies attempted 17 threes, and made 3 of them. THREE! Good for a paltry 18%. The Wizards defended the three! It’s a Christmas miracle!

Key Takeaways:

Look at this Vine of Garrett Temple.

Christmas season hasn’t been the most joyous for the Wizards. The agony of injuries has reached peak emotions for all of us fans, having to watch the team tap into uncharted waters to find some sort of refuge from it. This isn’t really the first time Garrett Temple has been appointed to help magically salvage a broken team. However, this really is the first time Garrett Temple has actually helped to magically salvaged a broken team. After last night, go ahead and tally up three straight 20+ point games for Temp, as he led all Wiz scorers with 20 points. PS- he has also averaged 5.3 rebounds over the past three games as well. Temple has virtually made up for anything a healthy Bradley Beal has accomplished this season, and has proved to us that Christmas time is truly the season of giving.

Kelly Oubre is a cute stocking stuffer.

Oubre has started the past three games for the Wizards and he hasn’t exactly been a shitty variety pack of The Hobbit Pez candies in your stocking. He’s more like an amazing variety pack of Ninja Turtle Pez candies in your stocking. Oubre’s numbers won’t exactly have you spitting out your eggnog or feel as lucky as landing under a mistletoe next to your office bae, but watching him will make you understand that something really nice could be brewing. Kelly has a nice foundation of sneaky strength and feistiness. He’s looking more relaxed in the scheme of play, he’s getting himself open for shots, and he’s hitting more than a few of them. In fact, he hasn’t missed a 3 in the last three games (6-for-6).

Let’s talk about Marcin Gortat and his elusive dunk.

Like the randomness of the weather during this Christmas time in the DC area, we were likened to the randomness of Marcin Gortat on the tail end of a successful alley-oop that was actually a forceful dunk. But the outrageously historic 70+ degree weather? Let’s analogize that with the fact that it was Gary Neal that chucked it up. Let’s also establish the fact that his lob looked so misaimed, more kudos to Gortat for his focus on controlling the ball and still being able to Hammer it down.
